A title sequence for a documentary that earns its slowness.
Northwave is a documentary series about Atlantic surf culture. We made the title sequence: a 38-second piece that's less montage and more meditation — an introduction that earns the slow pace of the series itself.
Make a slow sequence that holds attention.
Most title sequences are fast. They have to be — a viewer is sitting through them every episode and wants to skip. Northwave's pilot ran 9 minutes before any speech; the title needed to match that confidence.
The director's only request: "I want the title to feel like the first wave of the day. Slow build, then it's on you."
Make the type do the heavy lifting.
We commissioned a custom display typeface from a friend of the studio, designed to look like coastal signage from a previous decade. The 3D camera spends 25 of its 38 seconds on water — the type arrives last, holds, and dissolves into the first shot of the episode. No music for the first 20 seconds; just wind and breath.
"It does in 38 seconds what most episodes need 5 minutes to do. It tells you what kind of show this is."
The sequence became a recruitment ad for the series.
The title sequence was clipped out and shared as a 38-second teaser before the series itself launched, and pulled in a third of the show's eventual day-one audience. It's now part of the series' permanent intro across all platforms.
